When chiropractic treatment is suitable – and when it is not
Chiropractic care is a manual technique working with the spine and joints. To keep it safe we need to know your health status before the first treatment. That is why we fill in an intake questionnaire and informed consent with every new client. It is not a formality – it is how we protect you.
How the intake questionnaire works
Before the treatment you fill in a short form at the clinic: personal details, reason for the visit, the nature and intensity of your difficulties, medication and allergies. A list of contraindications follows, where you tick everything that applies to you. It takes a few minutes and we go through it together.
If a contraindication appears, the treatment may be postponed, adjusted or declined. In many cases a gentler alternative exists – for example the therapeutic bed with electromagnetic impulses, local cryotherapy or soft tissue techniques. We always agree on what is safe for you.
Contraindications we ask about
- A recent fracture or injury of the spine or joints
- Advanced osteoporosis
- Malignant bone tumours or metastases
- Acute infection or fever
- Acute inflammation of the spine or joints
- Cauda equina syndrome (bladder/bowel dysfunction, saddle numbness)
- Progressive muscle weakness or paralysis
- Suspected vascular disease of the cervical arteries or a previous stroke, per your doctor's advice
- Cervical spine instability (e.g. after injury or with some rheumatic diseases)
- Rheumatoid arthritis affecting the cervical spine
- Anticoagulant treatment / blood clotting disorder
- Recent spine or joint surgery
- Pregnancy (please state the week)
- Orthopaedic implants in the spine or joints – hip or knee endoprosthesis, fixation screws, plates, metal plates, artificial intervertebral disc, spinal stabilisation
- Other serious illness
Implants – what applies and what does not
The restriction concerns orthopaedic implants in the spine and joints: hip or knee endoprosthesis, fixation screws, plates, metal plates, artificial intervertebral disc or spinal stabilisation. In these cases manipulation techniques are not suitable.
On the other hand, breast (silicone) implants, dental implants and pacemakers are not an obstacle to chiropractic care.
Not sure?
Call or write before booking. We will advise whether chiropractic care is suitable in your case, or recommend another form of care. Chiropractic treatment does not replace medical care – if in doubt, consult your doctor.
