An afternoon at Motol: toys, crayons and watermelons for the children's oncology ward
We did not plan an event around it. We met on a Friday afternoon, loaded the car and drove to Motol. We are writing about it only now – mainly because it might nudge someone else to do something similar.
On the afternoon of Friday 26 June 2026 the ChiroMiro team, together with the Kavura family, Elen from the Sousedka bistro and her neighbours, delivered toys, building sets, art supplies and fresh fruit to the Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at Motol University Hospital in Prague.
It started over coffee next door
Sousedka is the kind of bistro where you stop for a coffee and leave with a plan. Elen, the owner, brought together people from the street. The Kavura family joined in, then a few more neighbours. Within days the hallway was full of boxes.
Nobody was assigned anything. Someone brought building sets, someone crayons and sketchbooks, someone sent money for fruit. Watermelons, bananas, apricots, apples – the sort of ordinary, fresh food that is worth its weight in gold in a hospital.
Friday afternoon, the paediatric oncology ward
The trolley in the corridor looked more like an overloaded market stall. Plush toys on top, books, art supplies, crates of fruit underneath. Moving it along the ward took some careful steering so that nothing fell off.
We did not photograph the children. On a ward where far more important things are at stake than anyone's website, that is the only right call. The photos here only show that we really were there, with that trolley.
One image stayed with us: a child choosing a plush toy and taking their time over it, as if it were the most important decision in the world. That moment was the whole point.
Why we are writing about it only now
We hesitated about writing at all. Help that is turned into advertising loses part of its value. In the end one simple reason won: this kind of thing works better with more people involved. If someone reads how easily one street pulled it together, they may do the same.
At the ChiroMiro practice in Prague 8 – Čimice we talk with people about pain every day, about what holds them back from living fully. Perhaps that is why it makes sense to step outside now and then and be useful in another way.
